What's the rating?
- A must-see.
What's interesting about it?
- What's not interesting? This is the first Who script from Douglas Adams (a few years before he became famous for Hitchhiker's Guide), filled with clever ideas and interesting characters, acted (and just maybe over-acted here and there -- Adams apparently despaired of how far the actors took things, but it's all in good fun) with gusto by the cast.
- The show could just as well have been called "A New Hope" , in that you could plop a complete non-Who-fan in front of this and their first comment from the stage design and costumes would be, "So this came out the year after Star Wars, eh?" You've got a Skywalker look-alike, you've got hover craft, you've got costumes that are a cross between Storm Troopers and Darth Vader...
The story, though, is unique and clever with some surprising twists. And the villain of the piece (the deliciously over-the-top Bruce Purchase) is a surprisingly well-costumed early version of the Borg. Ignore the incomprehensible way the Doctor saves things in the last few minutes of the story and you have a real gem.
